When you first arrive in Harran and are rescued by Jade the Tower people - the survivors of this wicked nasty virus - treat you like a non-person. They do not even bother learning your name, preferring to think of - and address you - as Number 31.
Slowly you will complete missions and quests, do favors, and build relations to the point that they start to think of you as one of them, and more important to you, they remember your name and use it.
One of the most illustrative images that you will find in the game is the space that they set aside for your use - your living space and quarters - which are a bedroom in Flat 194 on the 19th floor of the Tower.
Flat 194
Shared with some other runners, you get your own bedroom, and it is really actually nasty when you first see it. All it has is dirt, trash and a bare mattress on the floor! That is a temporary situation however - because your progress in the game both for Story Missions, Side-Quests, and optional actions will directly shape this living space of yours!
If you are paying attention you will notice the following improvements to your living conditions in your flat - it is not clear if you do all of this or others do it for you as a way of saying thanks - we suspect it is a combination of the above - but you will notice the following improvements over time:
Check out the third image embedded above - and the new mementos that we have added to our room to commemorate side-quests completed!
There is Rupert the Gunsmith's Wizard Hat, the talking foll from the Pawn Shop. a few more pics and the No Vacancy Sign from the Bites Motel. Link's Master Sword is on the wall above the picture board, adn you did notice the binoculars from the side-quest of that name?
The creativity that went into decorating Kyle's room is worthy of notice and praise :)
There are More Changes in Store
When you first obtained your room there was an acoustic guitar in it - you can only strum a few Notes on it but, in the Slums there is a house you will eventually find in which there is a guitar and lesson book - after you view that you are able to play a short song on your guitar!
Each major accomplishment delivers some sort of minor addition - see if you can spot them as they happen - hey it is all in fun, but this is the sort of detail in the games that has earned Techland and the wizards who created the Dead Island and Dying Light games the solid reputation that they have!
